What is Light up a Life?

Christmas is a time to remember loved ones who are no longer with us but still in our hearts. St John’s Hospice Light Up A Life appeal is a special way to celebrate this memory by dedicating a light on one of our trees, a shining tribute to loved ones that we have lost, whether they have been cared for by St John’s or not.

People come together to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones at our Light up a Life events in Kendal and Morecambe. Each service is unique - it gives everyone the opportunity to honour that special person in words and music, and see the trees light up in remembrance. Along with marking our love, by sponsoring the lights and making a donation we can also do our bit to help St John’s Hospice continue caring for families in our community, both now and in the future.

Director of Income Generation, Catherine Butterworth, “Our Light up a Life
services allow us time to reflect and time to remember the loved ones we have
lost. When this time of year is upon us, our community takes great comfort from our Light up a Life tribute and the support we offer. The lights shine on our hospice trees, not only to remember those that were cared for by St John’s, but all the wonderful people in our community that still hold a special place in many peoples’ hearts. Each year, every light means that the memory of that person still shines.

Cynthia Hobson stayed at St John’s Hospice for her end of life care. Before
she passed she said, “Here, there’s no place like it. It’s honestly an amazing and
beautiful place. The staff will do anything for you, not just the powers that be but everyone, whatever job they are doing. I’ve come here to re-live; you can start your life again here at St John’s. I’m like royalty, I couldn’t be treated better.”
